BMKG Asks Citizens Cisolok to Be Aware of a subsequent landslide due to High Rainfall

Pojok Fakta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the intensity of rainfall in the Cisolok District, Sukabumi, West Java, was still high. The community, especially in the Cimapag Hamlet, was asked to be alert to the potential for a subsequent landslide.

"With the current rainfall conditions, it is very likely that there will be a subsequent landslide. It is recommended that the community remain vigilant and stay away from landslide-prone areas. Moreover, this area has steep slopes, and is composed of loose soil," said Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati, Saturday (1/12/2018).

Dwikorita revealed, PVMBG has mapped landslide prone areas, while BMKG has the task of providing early warnings regarding rainfall and extreme weather information to the local BPBD. Thus it is expected that regional governments can be more responsive in disaster mitigation and mitigation efforts.

"In the map, this area (Cisolok-red) includes the middle and high zones for land movement. This means that this area can occur if ground movements are above normal, ie heavy rainfall or long duration of rain for several hours or even a few days, "Dwikorita said.

He said that rainwater that seeped into the slopes could result in increased groundwater pressure as a thrusting force.

Dwikorita also appealed to landslide-prone areas not to be used as residential areas, but instead to become protected areas. According to him, relocation is the right choice for local residents so that the incident is no longer repeated.

On that occasion, Dwikorita with the Head of BNPB Doni Monardo and PVMBG Head Kasbani also planted vetifer (vetiver) plants. These plants are useful for slowing and spreading water runoff, reducing soil erosion, and strengthening soil binding capacity on slopes to be more stable. In addition, plants that are rooted can also act as natural reinforcing anchors on the soil slope.
